The third man (1949) --- review by Hilda
Introduction:
The third man is a 1949 British noir film is made by
London films production. The film is directed by Carol Reed and written by
Graham Greene. It is describe after the World War II, the rampant period of black market in Vienna, the
businessman to sell penicillin with a small bottle for £70. An American novelist Holly Martins arrives
here to find his friend Harry Lime who was died by a car. At Harry’s funeral, a
sergeant Calloway asks Holly to leave Vienna, but Holly wants to find out
the truth of his friend’s death, thus he begins to investigate the case with
Harry’s lover, Anna. The third man is the key character of this film.Introduction:
This
film is quite old, there has no gorgeous effects or some cool actions. It
is quite simple to describe a murder story and the wicked businessman in the
black period. The third man is made in 1949. In this period, directors only can
use their own photographic skill to make a good film. They calculate the
composition of the picture, the skylight, emphasize to portray the actor’s eye
contact and the most important is to present a good story.

So
this is why this film got a lot of prizes, it also still stands the top of 100
British movies.
In
my view, the most impressed scene is Holly talk with Harry in big wheel. Harry
just wants to calculate how to earn more money, he never concerned about the
sufferer. This is awful idea that makes me feel disgusting.

I
think that the most difference between British and American film, it is they
want to express the different themes and prominent details. For example, the
American films are more describe a hero theme like <Captain America>,
<Superman>.

I haven't study the differences between the Britain and American films yet. However, we have the same agreement on the production methods, such as the connectivity of pictures, the light source and the actor's eye contact. Do you think the epitasis is very compact and splendid? The awful atmosphere flooded through all the story. The director used simple techniques made such a classic black and white movie!
