THE THIRD MAN --------- Clara

The film "THE THIRD MAN" narrates an out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, arrives in a post war Vienna divided into sectors by the victorious allies, and where a shortage of supplies has lead to a flourishing black market. He arrives at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, who has offered him a job, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. From talking to Lime's friends and associates Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and determines to discover what really happened to Harry Lime.

I am very interested in the filming techniques, such as the function of light in the film and how does film soundtracks affect it.

First, the frame which gave me the deepest impression is the classic lens of Orson Welles' appearance. The character hidden in the black porch, revealing only the feet, and then suddenly the lights turned on, people's faces can be recognised, the atmosphere of suspense  stretched to the summit instantly by the perfect image. Then Joseph Cotten chased him, however, blocked by cars, Orson Welles vanished as the car disappeared, and then lens turned to the side of a deep lane, slightly tilted, we can see a long shadow of escape on the wall. Joseph Cotten catched up, his shadow instead of the shadow of Orson Welles, Orson Welles disappeared in the square again, the suspense was promoted once more. I think these scenes are very perfect and intriguing.

secondly, there are some other classic scenes in the film as following:

Lastly, I want to say that it is a graceful crime film. The exquisite pictures, the dark grey street, the prominent expression in characters' eyes. I think this is a real charm of the black and white movies. What is more, you will not feel confused when you watch it as the setting of plots are close to the development of story all along.
