The Radio Star – never be killed -- By Hilda

“ Video killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, when the first music video was played in 1981.
Recently, the development of technology like TV, the cassette tape, the CD and the iPod, which is seems to kill the radio.

However, all of them are failed.

What make you surprising is “ there are plenty of venture capitalists betting big that good old, the steam- age radio cannot just survive but thrive” by the writer.

David Grossman mentioned that the radio listening figures keep remarkable well.

Nowadays, the apps of the smartphone can receive signal from all over the world, anyone can tune in to the radio. However, consider about the local medium, the ads fees are sold locally, listeners on the other side of the world might not interested in it, meanwhile, they need to focus on the expensive network fees and battery life of the mobile phone.

Therefore, the “Ad transformation” and give the audience a chance to feedback, which is help to solve the problem.

The writer said, "People want to be connected with other people, they want to be part of a tribe, they want to be accepted and that's what radio brings." So the radio can survives due to the audience value it.

My opinion

For the modern society, it is true that people listening radio has been decreased because the technology developed. However, the old people still like to use the old-fashion radio to listen the news. The writer mentioned that although the FM-based platform may be instead by the digital switchover in the UK, the minister suggested, “ the FM signal may not be switched off until at least the end of the decade.” Therefore, I assume that the radio can survives and thrives well. From the angle of protecting the invention, the radio should be survived.

  1. With my all respect to your point of view Hilda, I think the old and recent generations still seeking to listen to the radio where ever they are.
It is because of the variety of programs it presents as news, hot discussions point, music and even drama!
For me, I most listen to radio to learn from others opinions, I like spending time listening to discussions and to others opinions.

    Thanks for sharing :)

    1. Yes!! I think that some people still like to turn on the button to search the broadcasting station, and listening the local voice. Not all of the people like the high technology products, like we have the computer, we can print out anything quickly, but someone still like to handwrite.

  2. I agree with your point just like I said in my post. Although the technology are developing our lives, bringing new sights and creativity in to our lives, something old still exist, such as the new media is challenging the mass media, however, the newspaper still exist. It depends on people's choices. But shall we discuss that whether the radio will exist in the future? After 30 years? Will the young generations choose radio in the future technological age? With the disappearing of the old generations?

    1. As the writer mentioned about the FM signal, you can see that it is used for the radio of the car. Nowadays, we still need to turn on the button to search the broadcasting station when people driving the car. As you said, in the future, it might not exist because of the young generation might not interested in the radio. However, as long as people want to connect with others, they still need radio. The broadcast provide the chance for people to reflect their opinion.
