Will we never hear the sound of telephone in the future?---Yu

Do you use telephone recently?

I think the frequency to call people has been decreasing due to the diffusion of text, email services and SNS such as Facebook, WhatsApp, WeChat and Twitter.

As you might already know, even in working place the same situation has occurred.

The writer considers the meaning and effect of media technology for office through the history of some inventions; adding machine, filling cabinet, telegraph and telephone.

Especially she focus on this point in the term of the effect ;did they make office life better or worse?’

Writer’s view

1. adding machine and filing cabinet

She evaluate positively the adding machine and the cabinet from the view of making work more efficient. On the other hand, she claims that they did not change condition of business dramatically.

Moreover, she criticises the increase of boring excess work by the cabinet with her own experience.

2. telegraph

It seems that she think highly of it with comparing to recent technology like this;

The telegraph was the Victorian internet,

The spread of the telegraph was almost as fast as Facebook today

The beauty of the telegraph was that it invented brevity long before Twitter made it cool.

3. telephone

a)evaluation of function

She praises it because it made the system of communication more global and simultaneous than telegraph. In addition, telephone changed the structure of business into democratic one.

B)evaluation in UK

In America, this invention was accepted enthusiastically, whereas, in UK it took long hours to spread it generally due to the difference of social structure, which means there were many people like servant in UK who deliver messages. Moreover, there was doubt to telephone whether it would invade privacy, this leaded that bank hesitated to introduce it on business occasion.

c)feminism and telephonist

At the beginning of the service of telephone, people who exchange the line were needed.

She criticises that telephone operator, which was not exciting but stressful work, seemed as women’s work.

As I mentioned on the filing cabinet, it can be said that she opposes that women were given uncreative, easy tasks for men who do creative jobs.

d)current situation

She insists that office 'landlines' have been dead for several years and  'I don't like random disturbances any more than Edwardians did, I've stopped answering my desk phone altogether'. Also, she asserted she never makes a mistake by it.

To sum up, it is argued that telephone is no longer necessary for business.

My opinion

It is true the importance of telephone has been declined because of new technologies. However, I assume that  the telephone can survive even if the form would be changed. The reason is that the immediateness is apt to be needed in business scenes such as telling the sudden change as to a project with the other company.

Particularly for the job related to journalism, immediacy is always required.
When I worked for a Japanese newspaper company as a clerk in foreign news section, editors communicated with correspondents with fixed phone, although they used email as well.

There are one telephone on each desk at least, and they ,who pick up the phone, often give another person extension.

On the other hand, they also used Skype with computer. Skype has the merit that they can work such as writing article and watching website while talking to people unlike the normal telephone. However, there are disadvantages as well. For example, they cannot use if they do not start up Skype application in their devices and the sound quality depends on the network because it applies not landline but Internet network.

Therefore, Skype had not been more popular than the telephone in the working place where workers have to communicate with people all over the world like without enough network.

While I believe calling someone and ‘random disturbances’  would never be extinct, I admit that the devices has been changing.

Imagining media technologies which have been disappeared…

Phonograph

Typewriter

CRT television

Videotape

Cassette tape

MD                       and  so on

We seldom see these devices in recent daily life, but the main function has remained in latest devices.

Media technology

Main function/purpose

Latest technology which has the same function

Phonograph

Listening to music

CD player, computer

Typewriter

Recording something with words

PC, printer

CRT television

Watching image

Digital Television

Videotape

Recording image

DVD, Blue-ray

Cassette tape, MD

Recording sound

CD

In other words, a technology has continues to be replaced by new technology which has greater performance but it is difficult to abandon the progress which we have obtained once.

In conclusion, I argued that the way of communicating in office would change but people would just increase the way of keeping touch with other people and not be able to lost any measure unlike this author.

◊Sound of media technology

The writer mentions sounds which we can hear in working place.

Now: buzz of a photocopier, vibration of a mobile phone, faint sound of printer

Past: continuous telephone rings and typewriter

As stated above, there are the sound which has been vanished with progress of technology.

Especially, the noise of dial up makes me nostalgic.

What sound do you feel nostalgic about?

  1. Thank you for share this quite interesting blog to us, I totally agree with you. As you mentioned that people use mobile phone to send message or use internet to send email recently, telephone no longer a main way for people to communicate. Actually, it is the same situation in my family, we have a telephone but just my parents use it. However, I think that telephone could survive. The reason is that the staff only can use telephone to communicate with client, because it convenient and the company may not give telephone fees if you use your own mobile phone in the office. Moreover, for the old people, they used to use telephone. Therefore, I think that although the new technology might replace a technology, the most important part of the old invention that we should retain it.

    2. There is little bit different in my family. We have a telephone and we still pay to telephone company but actually nobody use it, including my parents and grandparents. They all familiar with smartphone. It is an interesting question, why the telephone still be there, despite it does not be used? But it just one case in my family.

In the beginning, people use pen and paper to write letter to contact with each other. Then telephone had been invented, this invention changed the society and our life. It also was a very useful tool in office. With the high technology developed, people find out some drawbacks of landline and due to people have more and different needs and requirements. Then came the mobile phone, smart phone, Skype, face-time, etc. Thus, I think in future, the importance of telephone might be reduced and people will have increasing different ways to communicate and share information with each other.

  3. Thank you share the information about the change of telephone, also the BBC news mentions that there were just paper and quills in the beginning, then came the typewriter, the filing cabinet, telegraph. Finally, in 1876 came the telephone. Due to the development of technology, all the devices were invented. Moreover, it has changed the society and people's life.
Such as, the telephone that made business big and democratic, and meant a new etiquette. More importantly, your introduce the feminism and telephonist. With the spread of telephone, the effect of the feminine voice upon the masculine mind. Therefore, the new technologies have influences on our behaviours and the development of society.
Nevertheless, the telephone indeed make our office life more silent. Most people use the devices to communicate with each others, filled with the sound of telephone ringing and knocking the keyboard, rather than face- to-face communication. Although it can increase efficiency, less opportunity to communicate with each others. So the writer have a question about ‘did they make office life better or worse?’
Maybe in the future, developers will consider this factor to invent more practical device, enhancing the communication with people, for example, video chat is popular all the world. Therefore, when more people use the new technologies, the importance of telephone will be gradually decreased.

  4. Thanks for sharing your opinion to us, I am agree with you, although the using rate of telephone is decline because of new technologise, but in my family, we are still using telephone, even though all of my family members have smartphone. In China, there have some system which is about internet connect. If you want use internet, according to the requirement of internet company, you have to set up telephone, telephone is a kind of medium to link with network.Anyway, I think telephone is still necessary to us, in order to have a good quality of sleep, many people choose to shut down their smartphone, but life is full of unkown thing, when something happen in other words, some emergency but we can not find people because of they shut down their smartphone, the only way is call the telephone number. However, telephone is important, not only in the office, but also at home, so I think it can survive.
