1.What was the 1938 Munich Settlement?
Munich Settlement is an agreement signed by Germany, Britain, France and Italy in Munich in Germany meeting on 29th  of  September, 1938. In this agreement, Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia , where most of the residents spoke German, was ceded to Germany, in which Adolf Hitler reigned, with a term in which Germany could not demand more territory in Europe, however there was no presence of Czechoslovakia.


2. What is meant by appeasement?

Appeasement is a policy “conventionally defined as the satisfaction of grievances through unilateral concession, with the aim of avoiding war” (Norrin et al, 2008, p.149). Munich Settlement is one of the appeasement by Neville Chamberlain.


3. Who was Neville Chamberlain



Neville Chamberlain is a former prime minister of UK between 1937 and 1940 and famous for adopting appeasement policy against Nazi Germany. He was born in Birmingham in 1869. He successively held various posts as a politician of conservative party such as chancellor of the exchequer and minister of health until he was elected as a prime minister.







4. What did Neville Chamberlain's famously claim when he returned from Munich?



Peace for our time


5. Was he right? & 6.What were the consequences of this appeasement?

No. In March 1939, Hitler broke the Munich Settlement, then the rest of Czechoslovakia was seized by German Army. Finally, five months later, in September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland and Chamberlain proclaimed war on Germany this leaded to World War 2.


              
               7.Who was the Duke of Windsor at that time?
Edward VIII.

8.Why is he accused of being a Nazi sympathiser? What does this mean?

He visited Germany to see Hitler in 1937 although the British government warned not to go. During his stay, he greeted with Nazi style. After becoming bad relationship between UK and Germany owing to the annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia, he visited there many times so it was criticized that there are the possibility for other countries to consider Britain to support Nazi.


9. Was this likely to have been popular with Britons? (Why/not?)

Yes. Munich settlement was welcomed by almost all British because it seemed to have avoid a war with Germany. However, there were some politicians who criticized owing to the dishonoured act and losing the corporation of Czech Army which had the best in Europe.
