The 39 Steps
The 39 Steps (1935) is one of the earlier Alfred Hitchcock British spy-chase suspense-thrillers from a vintage period, his 18th film. Considered his first real masterpiece, it is both a crowd-pleasing box-office success and an extremely influential film that brought the famed director attention from US audiences. The film's tightly-plotted screenplay was loosely based on the 1915 novel of the same name by Scottish author John Buchan, and freely adapted by playwright Charles Bennett, Ian Hay and Hitchcock himself. The film was remade twice afterwards, both in the UK:
- The Thirty-Nine Steps (1959), d. Ralph Thomas
- The Thirty-Nine Steps (1978), d. Don Sharp
The Thirty-Nine Steps, a contrived title, is Hitchcock's first film with a classic theme that he modeled repeatedly for the remainder of his career. It is the typical Hitchcockian story of an average, innocent, ordinary man who is framed by circumstantial evidence and thrust against his will into an extraordinary situation that he doesn't understand
A man in London tries to help a counter espionage agent.
But when the agent is killed and he stands accused, he
must go on the run to both save himself and also stop a spy ring
trying to steal top secret information.
The film is filled with number of twists and what make them fun is
how they play against type. For instance, Hannay(Robert Donat)
tries to pose as the husband of a woman in a train as cover from the cops
and she simply turns him in instead of playing along.
This missdirections feed into the film's dark humor as Hannay finds himself in some bleak situation, when a woman named Pamela finds herself hancuffed to who she thinks is a murder, instead they make their way across the country side and stay the night at inn.
while he sleeps, Pamela manages to slip out of the hancuff, but then over hears one of the fake policemen. The conversation confirms Hannay assertions. She returns back to sleep. In the morning she told him what she heard. He sends her to inform the police, but they follow her instead to get to Hannay.
Pamela leads them to Mr.Memory's show. When the performed introduced Hannay recognizes his themes music. Hannay puts two and two togethear and realises that the spises are using Mr.Memory to smuggle the secrets out. As the police take him into custody, he shouts out the question, "What are the 39 steps?". Mr.memory complusively begins to answer, "The 39 Steps is an orgnaisation of spies, collection information on behalf of the forign office of...." just then Jordan shoots him and tries to flee, but is apprehended. The dying Mr.Memory recites the information stored in his brain- adesign of a silent aircraft engine.
The end ^_^
